Teaching Videos
This video shows 5 minutes of a 50 minute discussion period taught by myself for CHM 2011 (Organic Chemistry I) Section 004. This segment occurs about 20 minutes into the class and shows the class and I discussing how to work through a problem requiring them to name a stereocenter’s absolute configuration.
Students have already had a previous lecture with the professor on these concepts and how to approach this type of problem. I demonstrate the steps to answer this problem by asking the students to participate in the process. I also answer questions and provide clarification.
After this video we do another more complicated example using the same steps as practice. Then the students are asked to answer a question using electronic clickers first by themselves (revealing whether they are understanding the material) and then with help from their peers (allowing them to teach one another). This video was shot on a phone camera by a volunteer. The camera picked up glare from the board making parts of the board difficult to see, this glare was not present by eyesight.
